1999 Cricket World Cup, May 14 - June 20, Silver Proof Coin - 1000 Rupees
Two commemorative coins in the denominations of Rs.1,000/= and Rs.5/= were issued by the Central Bank to mark the winning of the 1996 Cricket World Cup by Sri Lanka and the 1999 tournament held in England.The Rs.1000/= coin is round in shape and minted in silver. The obverse of the coin depicts two cricketers – a batsman and a wicket-keeper in the centre. The words “1999 Cricket World Cup” and “May14-Jun 20” appear above the figure of two cricketers and the legal tender value of the coin “Rs.1000” appear below in large numerals. The value in words in Sinhala, Tamiil and English, appear against the numeral 1000. The participating countries in the tournament namely, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe appear along the periphery. The reverse of the coin depicts an impression of the 1996 Cricket World Cup in the centre together with the words “World Cricket Champions” in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The words “Sri Lanka” appear on the periphery and the year of issue “1999” is depicted at the bottom.
